Evaluation on Sandra's Performance

In the next assessment session, my partner Sandra had to recreate my ideas. Beforehand, we had prepped and discussed the idea thoroughly so that it was understood where the idea had come from. The only thing missing on the day was my hair inspiration. I think that this would have helped Sandra to understand more the concept of where the hair idea came from. The execution of the idea was precise and in the given time. Sandra prepped my hair beforehand by crimping it which saved some time in the assessment. In my opinion I think that the hair could have been bigger on the side and also on the top. It probably would have been better to use padding as I would’ve been able to control how much volume I needed in the hair style. The whole hair idea was about texture, and this definitely came across through the crimping and the twists at the front. Originally I was going to have material twists in the front of the hair but we both decided that the hairstyle would look nice with just ribbon, as the material moved around.

For the makeup, I think that the eyes and lips weren’t as green as I wanted them to be because we were running out of time. Sandra was good at creating the base and really understood what I wanted to achieve with the highlighter and white triangles. The only thing I would have liked is for the lips to be more gradient like on my face chart. Other than that I am happy with the execution of the idea and am glad that we discussed the idea before and tried it out.

Evaluation on my performance

For our timed assessment we got paired with another person from the class to recreate our contemporary Elizabethan designs. Personally, I was more nervous to recreate the hair design given to me by my partner Sandra as it seemed so complex. However, after practising and discussing the look I felt more confident. The makeup design was simple to create but very detailed, which meant that I had to practise keeping a steady hand!

To begin the assessment, I prepped Sandra’s hair by curling it; because she had hair extensions in, it took longer which is why I came in earlier to get everything ready. I felt that I kept to the time management well with the hair. The only thing that I did struggle with, was getting the wire into the hair and how to attach it. This was because I didn’t have the wire in the practise sessions to see how to do it. Trying to get the wire into the hair was time costly and meant that I had less time to work on the makeup.

The detailing on the makeup was something that I practised in the makeup sessions and at home because I wanted to get this right. On the day, the lines weren’t as neat as I wanted them to be. If I was going to create this look again I would definitely spend longer on the makeup to make sure that it was completely perfect. I am happy with the images created and think that they are quite strong and show an interesting take on Contemporary Elizabethan.

Partners Assessment

For our timed assessment we got paired with another person from the class to recreate our contemporary Elizabethan designs. Personally, I was more nervous to recreate the hair design given to me by my partner Sandra as it seemed so complex. However, after practising and discussing the look I felt more confident.

Below are some images from the practise session:

Sandra's design included padding and wire. The padding was placed at the back of the head and pinned down so that the hair could cover this creating a curled effect at the front. The wire would be placed at the front where Sandra's hand is in order to make the hair stand out to the side. I like the idea here and think that it would work well with her makeup look. The hair in the assessment would be sprayed white to reflect on Sandra's inspiration, the Snow Queen.

Above is the final assessment image. I like how Sandra has incorporated the foil to create this regal feel to the image. The hair was sprayed white so that the makeup flowed with the hair. Paper was also added to create another texture. If I had more time to do the hair I would have made the hair smoother on the sides and back so that there would not be the small hairs that you can see by the ear.

During the assessment we filled out a consultation form so that I would know how to work with Sandra's hair.

Practise for Assessment

From the hair inspiration, I created the below hair chart which I wanted to take further and use for my assessment.
The front of the hair would be made up of twists, which would be brought around to the back of the head and then pinned. The rest of the hair would be crimped. When my partner Sandra practised the look, we found that the hair looked better if the front was pushed forward more into more of a beehive look. The sides also looked better being pinned under to create a shape around the side of the head. I decided to add ribbon to the twist to create a colour that compliments the make up look. I also decided to keep the hair style quite simple, because my makeup look was more intricate and needed more time then the hair.

The only problem my partner came across when making the twists was keeping the ribbon in the right place. During the practise I had given my partner some material to place in the hair which would then build up creating a large hair piece. However I decided that I didn't like the material and thought that ribbon would be better in the hair, which I had already practised in lesson.

I like how you can see here the different textures of the hair and the height of the front of the hair. The sides could be bigger creating more volume to the look. After the assessment it was said that we should have used padding to create this look. I definitely agree with this because the padding would have controlled the look and made the sides even also creating the right amount of volume. I also decided that more hair was needed for when the timed assessment came around.

My hair inspiration for my final look came from a lesson with my lecturer Seema Chopra and also the promo for Beyonce's 'Mrs Carter's' World Tour.

The lesson was about twists. I liked how they are different from the everyday braid used in the Elizabethan era. I wanted the twists to be tight like on the image above to the right.  This was because I wanted to create a lot of texture, but keep the hair off of the face to show the high forehead in a contemporary way. The inspiration for the side of the hair piece came from Beyonce's promo for the Mrs Carter World Tour. I liked how the side of the hair was textured and large taking a contemporary twist on the original Elizabethan shape, which would have been either side of the head.

Hair Technique - Crimping

Crimping
In order to crimp the hair you will need a crimping iron. Make sure this is set at 150˚. Sometimes when you hold the crimping iron you accidently press the + button to turn up the heat without realising. Therefore you should always keep an eye on the temperature.

  • As you are applying a lot of heat to the hair you need to prep this before to make sure that there is as less damage as possible. Use heat protective spray.
  • Ensure that there is a heat protective mat to avoid damage to surfaces.

  • Brush the hair thoroughly to get rid of knots. Section the hair into small, manageable sections.
  • Place the crimper about 10cm away from the root of the hair. Hold in place for 15 seconds, and then move down.
  •  Once you have completed crimping the hair, style as desired.
